Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Amerīnus.
Etymology: < classical Latin Amerīnus of Ameria < Ameria , the name of a town in Umbria (Italian Amelia ) + -īnus -ine suffix1. N.E.D. (1884) entered this as amarine , deriving it < classical Latin amārus bitter (see amarous adj.) + -ine suffix1.
Obsolete. rare.
Of the town of Ameria, in Umbria, Italy.Ameria is an ancient Roman town, formerly known as Amelia.
N.E.D. (1884) spelt this headword amarine, and defined it as ‘bitter, sour’ on the misunderstanding that the etymon was classical Latin amārus (see note in etymology).
