Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ēmerita.
Etymology: < Latin ēmerita, feminine of ēmeritus (see emeritus adj. and n.); formed as a feminine equivalent to emeritus adj.
Modifying the occupation or official title of a woman, esp. an academic: retired, former (and retaining the title as an honour). Chiefly as postmodifer.

1842 J. W. Alexander Let. 10 Mar. (1860) 351 Mrs. ——'s cook (emerita) Patty, she says, is ‘as pious a woman..as I ever saw’.
1928 N.Y. Times 14 Feb. 22/8 Professor Emerita Helen Gray Cone, a graduate of Hunter, read an original poem.
1977 Britannia 8 449 (note) R.P.W. had the advantage of discussing this interpretation with Emerita Professor J. M. C. Toynbee.
