Either or both of two pentapeptide endorphins.

1975 J. Hughes et al. in Life Sci. XVI. 1753 There is mounting evidence that the brain contains an endogenous constituent which acts as an agonist at morphine receptor sites... This substance..we have termed enkephalin.
1977 Sci. Amer. Mar. 51/1 A variety of evidence now indicates that the enkephalins are neurotransmitters of specific neuronal systems in the brain that mediate the integration of sensory information having to do with pain and emotional behaviour.
1978 Lancet 5 Aug. 293/1 Encephalins and opiate receptors are particularly concentrated in pain-related areas of the c.n.s.
1983 D. J. Weatherall et al. Oxf. Textbk. Med. I. xii. 50/2 The smallest of the endorphins are the two 5-amino-acid enkephalins which differ by one amino-acid—methionine enkephalin and leucine enkephalin.
