Etymology: < Old French enlumine-r, < late Latin inlūmināre (in classical Latin illūmināre ), < in- (see in- prefix1) + lūmen , lūminis light. Compare illumine v., illuminate adj. and n., allumine v. In sense 4 the word assumed the aphetic forms lumine v., limn v., the latter of which survives with modified sense.
