erchv.2

Forms: 1600s erch, 1600s erche.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: arch v.1
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps a variant or alteration of arch v.1Both the French and Latin sources of quot. 1601 imply the idea or curved or sinuous movement: the Middle French original (1562) has se recourbent pour nager en l'eau they curve themselves to swim in the water, while the classical Latin original has flexuoso corporum inpulsu ita mari utuntur they use the sea with a curving thrust of their bodies. With the phonological variation compare erch- , erche- , Middle English variants of arch- in e.g. archbishop n., archdeacon n.
Obsolete rare.
