Etymology: Old English eard masculine is cognate with Old Saxon ard masculine ‘dwelling’, Old High German art feminine ‘ploughing’, Old Norse örð feminine ‘harvest’ < Old Germanic *ardu-z, ardâ, probably < West Aryan root *ar to plough. For the sense compare Old English búan to cultivate, inhabit.
Obsolete.
