Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: epi- prefix, catechin n.
Etymology: < epi- prefix (compare epi- prefix 2b) + catechin n., after German Epicatechin (K. Freudenberg 1922, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 55 1735).
Biochemistry.
A flavonoid compound with antioxidant properties, found widely in plants and present esp. in cocoa, tea, and wine; any substituted derivative or stereoisomer of this.Epicatechin is an epimer of catechin, with two stereoisomeric forms.Formula: C15H14O6.
