Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἐπίικρισις.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ἐπίικρισις determination, judgement < ancient Greek ἐπικρίνειν to decide, determine (ἐπι- epi- prefix + κρίνειν to decide, judge: see crisis n.) + -σις -sis suffix. Compare post-classical Latin epicrisis judgement (1523 or earlier; already in classical Latin (in an inscription) denoting an examination of candidates for admission to the privileged class in Egypt).
1. Rhetoric. The rhetorical device by which a speaker proceeds to comment on a passage which he or she has just quoted.
