Etymology: < early modern German esch grayling (Old High German asco , Middle High German asch , masculine; now Äsche , feminine), cognate with Middle Low German asch , further etymology uncertain and disputed; perhaps < the Germanic base of ash n.2, with reference to the ash-grey colour of the fish.
