Etymology: < French éréthisme, < Greek ἐρεθισμός, < ἐρεθίζειν to irritate. (A misspelling erythism, due to false etymology, occurs in many medical books.)
Pathology.
Excitement of an organ or tissue in an unusual degree; also transferred morbid over-activity of the mental powers or passions.
