Etymology: < post-classical Latin enteron (4th cent. as interon) < ancient Greek ἔντερον intestine (usually in plural ἔντερα ) < the same Indo-European base as Old Icelandic iðrar (plural noun) guts, entrails, showing a specific use of the Indo-European base of classical Latin inter between (see inter- prefix).Compare the following earlier example of the Greek word (transliterated) in an English context:1565 J. Hall Anat. 3rd Treat. iv. v. 80 in tr. Lanfranc Most Excellent Woorke Chirurg. To the stomache is tyed, fastened, and continued one gutte, whyche..is..called by diuers names: generallye Entera in greeke, Intestina in latine.
