单词 eritrean
释义

Eritreanadj.n.

Brit. /ˌɛrᵻˈtreɪən/, /ˌɛrᵻˈtriːən/, U.S. /ˌɛrəˈtriən/, /ˌɛrəˈtreɪən/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Eritrea , -an suffix.
Etymology: < Eritrea (Arabic Iritriyyā, Tigrinya Ertra), the name of a region on the Red Sea in north-eastern Africa, now an independent country bordered by Sudan, Ethiopia, and Djibouti (see definition) + -an suffix. Compare French érythréen, érytréen of or relating to the Red Sea (1836 or earlier), of or relating to Eritrea (1891).The English place name is taken from Italian eritrea , adjective (in Colonia Eritrea , literally ‘Red Sea colony’, the name of an Italian colony founded in 1890), feminine of eritreo relating to the Red Sea (14th cent.; now also ‘relating to Eritrea’) < classical Latin erythraeus reddish (as used in Mare Erythraeum , denoting the Red Sea) < ancient Greek ἐρυθραῖος reddish, relating to the Red Sea < ἐρυθρός red (see erythro- comb. form) + -αιος, suffix forming adjectives; compare ancient Greek Ἐρυθρὰ θάλασσα, Hellenistic Greek Ἐρυθραῖος πόντος, both denoting the Red Sea. Compare the following isolated earlier example of Eritrean, designating the Red Sea:1577 E. Hellowes tr. A. de Guevara Chron. 65 The read Sea..is very great, and runneth from the Ocean of the Indiaes, vnto Arabia, and is otherwise named the Sea Eritrean [Sp. mar eritreo].
A. adj.
