Etymology: Originally (in α. forms) < classical Latin epistola epistle n. + -ian suffix. In later use (in β. forms) < classical Latin epistola epistle n. + -ean suffix. Compare earlier epistler n. 2, epistoler n. 2, epistolist n., epistolizer n.
Chiefly literary.
A writer of epistles or letters; a correspondent.
