Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: epistle n., -er suffix1.
Etymology: Probably < epistle n. (compare α. forms at that entry) + -er suffix1, perhaps after Middle French epistolier, French épistolier person who reads the Epistle during a church service (1505), letter-writer (mid 16th cent.). Compare post-classical Latin epistolarius person who reads the Epistle during a church service (see note), letter-writer (1535 in a British source; earlier denoting an imperial secretary (6th cent.). Compare epistler n. and earlier pisteler n.The sense ‘person who reads the Epistle during a church service’ of post-classical Latin epistolarius is recorded in J. F. Niermeyer Mediae Latinitatis Lexicon Minus (1976), but without example, and is not mentioned in other dictionaries of post-classical Latin.
