Forms: 1600s–1700s enthymematick, 1600s– enthymematic.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin enthymematicus; Greek ἐνθυμηματικός.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin enthymematicus in the form of an enthymeme (4th cent.), or its etymon (ii) ancient Greek ἐνθυμηματικός consisting of or in the form of an enthymeme < ἐνθυμηματ- , ἐνθύμημα (see enthymeme n.) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare earlier enthymematical adj.Compare French enthymématique (1668 in the passage translated in quot. 1685).
Logic and Rhetoric.
Of an argument, sentence, etc.: that takes the form of an enthymeme, esp. in leaving one or more premises unstated (cf. enthymeme n. 1a, 1b); (also) of the nature of an enthymeme; consisting of or employing enthymemes.
