Etymology: < ever n. + fern n.1, perhaps so called because wild boar were thought to feed on the rhizomes of polypody.In quot. 1908 apparently with the first element misapprehended as ever adv.
Obsolete.
(a) The common polypody, Polypodium vulgare (chiefly historical in later use); (b) the royal fern, Osmunda regalis.
