Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French anachronisme; Latin anachronismus.
Etymology: < (i) French anachronisme (1609 or earlier), or its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin anachronismus (1544 or earlier) < Greek ἀναχρονισμός , in scholia (medieval Greek or earlier) on Aeschylus Prometheus 846; < ἀναχρονίζειν anachronize v. + -ισμός -ism suffix. Compare slightly earlier anachronicism n.Compare Italian anacronismo (a1600).
1. An error in chronology; the placing of something in a period of time to which it does not belong (esp. one which is earlier than its true date). Also: the action or practice of making such errors or of placing things in this way. Cf. metachronism n. 1, prochronism n., parachronism n.
