Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἀνάκλητος.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ἀνάκλητος recalled < ancient Greek ἀνα- ana- prefix + κλήτος (see paraclete n.), after ἀνακαλεῖν to call back. Compare earlier paraclete n. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ·năklīt) /ˈænəkliːt/.
Obsolete. rare.
A person who has been recalled to his or her former religion.The title was sometimes applied to the Roman emperor Julian (c331–63 a.d.), also known as Julian the Apostate.
