Etymology: < eque (adjective) duly balanced (frequently in sic eque : see note) < classical Latin aequē (in post-classical Latin also eque ) equally, fairly, in post-classical Latin also (of an account) in balance (from 13th cent. in British (including Scottish) sources) < aequus equal (see equal adj.) + , suffix forming adverbs.In post-classical Latin documents (from 13th cent. in Scottish sources) the phrase et sic aeque ‘and thus equally’ was written at the end of an account when it was closed or settled.
