Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin essartum (also essartus , essarta ) (frequently from late 11th cent. in British sources), and its etymon (ii) Anglo-Norman and Old French essart (Middle French, French essart : see assart n.). Compare earlier assart n.
Law. Now historical and rare.
A piece of forest or waste land converted to arable use; = assart n. 1.
