释义

annuellern.

Brit. /ˈanjʊələ/, U.S. /ˈænjəwələr/
Forms:

α. late Middle English annueleer, late Middle English annueleer, late Middle English annueler, late Middle English annuelere, late Middle English aunueler, late Middle English annuellere, late Middle English 1800s 2000s– annueller, 1800s– annuellar.

Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: annual n., -er suffix1; French annueler.
Etymology: Either < (i) annual n. (compare variants at that entry) + -er suffix1, or < (ii) Anglo-Norman annueler, adjective (1414 designating a chaplain or priest who performs memorial masses, or earlier) < annuel annual n. + -er -er suffix2.The β. forms apparently show alteration by association with anniversary n. (compare sense 1 at that entry). The forms annivoler and annivolor show additional remodelling after benevoler n. (compare quot. c1540). Compare also post-classical Latin annuvellarius, annivelarius (1st half of the 14th cent. in British sources).
Now historical.
A priest who celebrates, or is endowed to celebrate, memorial masses for the dead, particularly year's minds (year's mind n.). Later also more generally: a priest endowed to say masses in a chantry, a chantry priest. Cf. annual n. 2.
