Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French anoisance.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman anuisance, anoisance, anoisaunce, anusaunce harm, trouble, nuisance, probably < anuis- , stem of anuire to harm, hurt (14th cent.; < a- a- prefix5 + nuisir , noiser , nuire to harm: see nuise v.) + -ance -ance suffix, but influenced semantically by association with Anglo-Norman anuer , annuer , annuier , Anglo-Norman and Middle French anoier , etc. (see annoy v. and compare discussion at that entry). Compare earlier annoyance n., and also earlier nuisance n., noisance n.With the β. forms compare en- prefix1.
