单词 ethanim
释义

Ethanimn.

Brit. /ˈɛθənɪm/, U.S. /ˈɛθənɪm/
Forms: 1500s– Ethanim, 1700s– Etanim.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Hebrew. Etymons: Latin Ethanim; Hebrew ēṯānīm.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin Ethanim (Vulgate), and its etymon (ii) Hebrew ēṯānīm (more fully yeraḥ hā-ēṯānīm ‘month of Ethanim’: 1 Kings 8:2), probably ultimately of Canaanite origin (compare Phoenician yrḥ 'tnm (probably yeraḥ ētānīm), denoting the same month). Compare German Ethanim (1524 in Luther's translation of the Bible). In later use the month name was associated with Hebrew ēṯān perennial, ever-flowing (with reference to regular inundations), although this may reflect a folk etymology; hence, it is often glossed as ‘month of swollen streams’ in dictionaries (W. Gesenius Hebräisch-aramäisches Handwörterbuch über die Schriften des Alten Testaments (1810) and later).
Judaism (now historical).
In the pre-exilic Jewish calendar: the seventh month of the religious year and first of the civil year, usually coinciding with parts of September and October; in post-exilic times called Tishri n.
