Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a French lexical item, and probably partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: eth- comb. form, -ene comb. form.
Etymology: < eth- comb. form + -ene comb. form, after French éthène (1838 or earlier in papers by A. Laurent). In later use probably after German Aethen (A. W. Hofmann 1866, in Monatsbericht der Königl. Preuss. Akad. der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, 1865 653; also Äthen and (now usually) Ethen).
Chemistry.
A flammable hydrocarbon gas of the alkene series, occurring in natural gas, coal gas, and crude oil and given off by ripening fruit; = ethylene n. 1. Also: any substituted derivative of this compound.Formula: C2H4.
