Etymology: < ether n. + -ene comb. form. Compare earlier etherin n. N.E.D. (1891) gives the pronunciation as (ī·þĕrīn) /ˈiːθəriːn/.
Chemistry. Obsolete.
= ethylene n.; (also) butylene (rare). Cf. etherin n.

The principal support of the theory, which considers this gas to be the radical of the ethers and of alcohol, is derived from the great simplicity of their constitution by volume, in the state of vapour, on that view.
