Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: exo- prefix, Greek ἔργον , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < exo- prefix + ancient Greek ἔργον work (see erg n.1) + -ic suffix. Compare endergonic adj.
Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Of a chemical or metabolic process: accompanied by the release of energy, the products having a lower free energy than the reactants. Contrasted with endergonic. Cf. exothermic adj.
