Forms: Also 1600s exerge, exurg.
Etymology: < French exergue (used frequently by De Bie 1634), apparently < Greek ἐξ out + ἔργον work; probably intended as a quasi-Greek rendering of French hors-d'œuvre, something lying outside the work.
Numismatics.
A small space usually on the reverse of a coin or medal, below the principal device, for any minor inscription, the date, engraver's initials, etc. Also, the inscription there inserted.
