Etymology: < (i) Middle French ethnarchie (1558 in a translation of Josephus, or earlier; French éthnarchie ), and its etymons (ii) post-classical Latin ethnarchia (1502 or earlier) and (iii) Hellenistic Greek ἐθναρχία office of ethnarch (Josephus; compare quot. 1602 at sense 2) < ἐθνάρχης ethnarch n. + ancient Greek -ία -y suffix3.
