单词 ethyl
释义

ethyln.

Brit. /ˈiːθʌɪl/, /ˈɛθʌɪl/, /ˈɛθ(ᵻ)l/, U.S. /ˈɛθ(ə)l/
Forms: 1800s ethule, 1800s ethyle, 1800s– ethyl.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from German. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: German Ethyl ; eth- comb. form, -yl suffix.
Etymology: Originally (denoting the radical C4H5, the formula of which was originally given by Liebig as C4H10) < German Ethyl (in this sense, J. Liebig 1834, in Ann. der Pharmacie 9 18; compare French éthyle , 1833 in a translation of Liebig that was published earlier than the German paper) < eth- (in Ether ether n.) + -yl -yl suffix. In later use (denoting the radical C2H5) < eth- comb. form + -yl suffix. Compare German Aethyl (also Äthyl and (now usually) Ethyl). In form ethule apparently reflecting the transliteration of ancient Greek υ as u ; compare quots. 1834, 1839 at sense 1.
Chemistry.
1. Originally: a hydrocarbon radical C4H5 or C4H10, supposedly present in ether (now historical). Later: an alkyl group —C2H5, which occurs in ethanol and its derivatives (and of which there are two in ether), derived from ethane by loss of a hydrogen atom.
