单词 anointed
释义

anointedadj.n.

Brit. /əˈnɔɪntᵻd/, U.S. /əˈnɔɪn(t)ᵻd/
Forms: see anoint v. and -ed suffix1; also late Middle English inoynted, 1900s– an'nted (English regional); Scottish pre-1700 onyntit (perhaps transmission error).
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: anoint v., -ed suffix1.
Etymology: < anoint v. + -ed suffix1. Compare ointed adj. at oint v. Derivatives. The semantic motivation for sense A. 4 is unclear. It may represent an ironic allusion to anointing as a means of conferring a particular official status on a person (compare anoint v. 3, and perhaps compare use as an intensifier of e.g. royal adj. 8, blessed adj. 5), or it may reflect anoint v. 6 (see discussion at that entry), the inference being that the person in question had been (or deserved to be) punished for wrongdoing. Compare earlier nineted adj. in the same sense.
A. adj.
