1966 M. Walker et al. in Jrnl. Chem. Physics 3456/1 The results appear to confirm the existence of 1:2 excited complex states, which we have termed exciplex states, for both solutes.
1972 C. H. DePuy & O. L. Chapman Molecular Reactions & Photochem. iv. 50 It is probable that the reaction involves an exciplex..that collapses to the biradical.
1976 K. Davis in R. Foster Molecular Association I. iii. 187 For systems in which no ground-state complex formation is detectable, formation of a complex is possible between an excited donor (or acceptor) and a ground-state acceptor (or donor)... Such a complex has been termed..an ‘exciplex’ or excited state complex and is similar to the complex formed between an excited-state molecule and a ground-state molecule of the same species termed an excimer.
1984 Science 23 Nov. 917/1 Electronically excited molecules, being better electron donors and acceptors than their ground states, form charge-transfer complexes (exciplexes) which can lead to radical ions. Exciplex emission is widely used to probe polymers and organized media such as membranes and micelles.
