Etymology: < (i) French anoli (implied in the plural anolis ( C. de Rochefort Hist. nat. des Iles Antilles (1658) i. xiii. 131, translated in quot. 1666); 1750 or earlier in singular form anoli ), and its etymon (ii) Island Carib anáoli (see anolis n.). Compare later anolis n.With the form anole compare French †Les Anoles (1693 in Ray in a Latin context), apparently a French plural form with definite article, but misunderstood in the following:1742 C. Owen Ess. Nat. Hist. Serpents 123 The Les Anoles, a Serpent in bigness like the Gallick Lizards. Any of numerous small, chiefly arboreal lizards of the New World family Polychrotidae (or Iguanidae), mostly of the genus Anolis, many of which have an extensible dewlap which in the male is typically brightly coloured.
