Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin anomalus , -ism suffix; Greek ἀνώμαλος , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin anomalus or its etymon ancient Greek ἀνώμαλος (see anomal adj.) + -ism suffix.
An irregular fact, characteristic, or circumstance; an oddity, an outlier; an anomaly. Also: deviation from what is standard, normal, or expected; anomalousness.
