单词 -way
释义

-waycomb. form

Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element.
Forms: see way n.1
Origin: Formed within English, by conversion. Etymon: way n.1
Etymology: < way n.1 (compare especially way n.1 and int.1 Phrases 6a(a)). Formations are often paired with a corresponding (and usually earlier) adverb in -ways comb. form.Earliest in Old English as the second element of an adverbial noun phrase with both elements in the accusative singular (compare α. forms at alway adv.). From the late 14th cent. onwards, compounds with way n.1 as the second element are attested in adverbial use (compare anyway adv., no way adv. and the γ. forms at alway adv.), leading to the use of the second element as a combining form to form adverbs in the course of the 15th cent. (compare e.g. straightway adv., needway adv.). From this time on, the first element of such formations can be either a descriptive adjective (see sense 1a) or a noun (see sense 1b); these continue in the early modern period (compare e.g., with adjective, broadway adv., crossway adv. and, with noun, sideway adv.). Some of these adverb formations are subsequently also used as adjectives (see sense 2), earliest in the 17th cent. (compare sideway adj., later also crossway adj.); original adjective formations occasionally appear in the 19th cent. (compare roundway adj.).
1. As a terminal element of adverbs.
a. In adverbs deriving from noun phrases of way n.1 used adverbially, referring to the manner in which something is done, or (less often) the direction or orientation of something. Chiefly in cases where way is modified by a determiner (e.g. alway adv., anyway adv., someway adv.), but later also with descriptive adjectives (e.g. crossway adv., straightway adv.).Compare parallel formations with -ways comb. form, which are typically earlier.
b. In compounds in which the first element is a noun, as sideway adv., sunway adv., typically referring to the direction or orientation of something.Parallel formations with -ways comb. form are typically earlier and more common.
2. As a terminal element of adjectives, arising from functional shift in the use of the corresponding adverb. See crossway adj., sideway adj.Adjectival use is now more common in formations with -ways (see -ways comb. form 2).
