Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French eugénol.
Etymology: < French eugénol (A. Cahours 1858, in Annales de chimie et de physique 52 201) < eugen- (in scientific Latin Eugenia , former genus name of the clove tree: see Eugenia n.) + French -ol -ol suffix. Compare earlier eugenic adj.1, eugenin n.
Chemistry.
A colourless aromatic oily liquid which is a phenol derivative occurring naturally as the principal component of oil of cloves and also present in various other plant extracts.Systematic name: 2-methoxy-4-(prop-2-en-1-yl)phenol; C10H12O2. Also called 4-allylguaiacol.
