Angosturan.

Brit. /ˌaŋɡəˈstjʊərə/, /ˌaŋɡəˈstjɔːrə/, /ˌaŋɡəˈstʃʊərə/, /ˌaŋɡəˈstʃɔːrə/, U.S. /ˌæŋɡəˈst(j)ʊrə/
Forms: 1700s– Angustura, 1800s– Angostura.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Angostura.
Etymology: < Angostura, the former name of a city in southeastern Venezuela (now Ciudad Bolívar), where the tree producing this bark grows and where the aromatic bitters produced from it were formerly manufactured.Compare Spanish angostura , angustura (1826 denoting in the bark, 1867 denoting an extract of this bark, 1928 denoting the aromatic bitters). Compare also post-classical Latin cortex Angusturae (1789 or earlier):1789 London Med. Jrnl. 10 154 This bark is known by the name of Cortex Angusturæ. We are able to supply it with any persons who may wish to give it a trial. The city was founded in 1764 as San Tomás de la Nueva Guayana de la Angostura , lit. ‘St Thomas of New Guiana of the straits’ ( < Spanish angostura , angustura narrow stretch in a river or waterway (c1275; c1196 denoting a constriction, c1230 denoting a mountain pass); < angusto narrow (see angust adj.) + -ura : see -ure suffix1), with allusion to its site on a narrow stretch of the Orinoco. It was renamed in 1846 in honour of Simón Bolívar (see Bolivian adj. and n.). The aromatic bitters, originally known as amargo aromatico, were invented as a digestive tonic around 1824 by Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert (1796–1870), German physician and then a resident of Angostura, while serving as Surgeon General to the armies of Simon Bolívar, and manufactured in the city until 1875, when production moved to Trinidad.
