释义

Angrezn.adj.

Brit. /ˈaŋɡrɛz/, U.S. /ˈæŋˌɡrɛz/
Inflections: Plural unchanged.
Forms: 1800s– Angrez, 1900s– Angrej, 1800s–1900s Angriz.
Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi ãgrez.
Etymology: < Hindi ãgrez (adjective) English, (noun) Englishman, apparently ultimately < either Portuguese inglês or its etymon French anglais (see Anglais n.). Compare earlier Angrezi n. and Angrezi adj. Both Portuguese and French influences are present in the region; the form of the Hindi word could reflect an etymon in either language and may have been influenced by both. In other languages of the region compare e.g. (clearly < Portuguese) Marathi iṅgrej, Kannada iṅgrej, (clearly < French) Tamil aṅkilēya, and also (apparently < Hindi) Indian Persian aṅgrez, iṅgrez. Compare the following, slightly earlier example of a longer phrase (Hindi aṅgrez fauj, lit. ‘English army’) used in an English context:1858 Standard 19 July 6/4 The day before we took Calpee, they swore on the Gangees and Koran to annihilate the Angrez Fauj.
