Etymology: < Hindi ãgrezī (adjective) English, (noun) the English language < ãgrez (see Angrez n.) + , suffix forming adjectives expressing belonging. Compare later Angrez adj. and Angrez n.Compare the following early example of the Hindi word in an English context (as part of a longer phrase; compare sahib n.), in a source that was not composed in India:1827 W. Scott Surgeon's Daughter in Chron. Canongate 1st Ser. II. xiv. 333 You are a Sahib Angrezie (English gentleman).
