单词 ewdendrift
释义

ewdendriftn.

Forms: 1600s ewindrift, 1700s ewdendrift, 1700s–1800s youdendrift, 1800s yowndrift, 1800s– yowdendrift.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: an element of uncertain origin, drift n.
Etymology: < a first element of uncertain origin + drift n.The first element shows considerable variation or alteration and it is difficult to determine the original form. Later forms appear to have been influenced by yowden , Scots past participle of yield v., although there is no obvious semantic connection. Perhaps compare rare Scots (Aberdeenshire) styfe eyne (also styth endrift ), in the same sense, apparently literally ‘choke breath (drift)’ ( < stife to choke (19th cent.; < stife n.) + aynd n.), although this is first attested much later:1801 W. Beattie Fruits Time Parings 40 The first thing meets him, is a dose Of styth endrift and hail.It is nevertheless possible that a form of aynd n. may perhaps be reflected in the first element of the present word, either as the relic of a longer compound, the original first element of which (stife or a word of similar meaning) has been lost, or perhaps even standing alone (compare English regional (East Anglian) use of aynd n. in the sense ‘sea-mist’ (19th cent.)).
Scottish (chiefly northern).
‘Snow raised, and driven by the wind’ (Jamieson).
