Etymology: < classical Latin anguīnus of a snake, consisting of snakes, resembling that of a snake < anguis snake ( < the same Indo-European base as Old Prussian angis , Lithuanian angis , Polish wąż snake, Russian grass snake) + -īnus -ine suffix1.With anguine lizard n. at Compounds compare scientific Latin Lacerta anguina (1758; the lizard is now called Chamaesaura anguina).
