Etymology: < faggot n. + -er suffix1. Compare Old French fagotere, Middle French, French fagoteur (13th cent.). Compare also post-classical Latin fagattorius maker of faggots (1361), fagator collector of faggots c1532.It is uncertain whether the following considerably earlier use as a surname (from Surrey) reflects the Middle English word or an Anglo-Norman parallel:1279 in B. Thuresson Middle Eng. Occup. Terms (1950) 74 Sim. le fagotter.
