Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French examineur.
Etymology: Originally < Anglo-Norman examinour, examynour, examynur, Old French exameneur, examineeur, examinor, Old French, Middle French examineur person who examines candidates for holy orders or membership of a religious body (late 13th cent. or earlier), person who formally takes down witnesses' testimonies or formally questions a witness (early 14th cent. or earlier), person who closely investigates something (1378; the precise sense is sometimes difficult to determine in early use) < examiner , examyner examine v. + -our , -ur , -eur -or suffix. Subsequently (in β. forms) remodelled by association with examine v. and -er suffix1. Compare examinator n. and the foreign-language forms cited at that entry.

a. A person who formally questions a witness; (also) one who conducts a judicial inquiry. Later also in less formal contexts: a person who questions someone closely; an interrogator.See also cross-examiner n. at cross-examine v. Derivatives.
