Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin analgesia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin analgesia (1679 in the passage translated in quot. 1684 at sense 1) < ancient Greek ἀναλγησία lack of feeling, insensibility < ἀν- an- prefix2 + ἄλγησις sense of pain (see algesia n.) + -ία -ia suffix1, after ἀνάλγητος insensible to pain, not painful. Compare French analgésie (1806). Compare algesia n.
