Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: exile n.1, -ic suffix.
Etymology: < exile n.1 + -ic suffix, originally after Dutch exilisch (1870 in the passage translated in quot. 1871), probably itself after German exilisch (1825 or earlier). Compare classical Latin or post-classical Latin exilicus (recorded in an 8th-cent. epitome of a 2nd-cent. grammarian). Compare earlier post-exilic adj. and pre-exilic adj.
Of or relating to exile, spec. (Jewish History) the exile of the Jews in Babylonia.
