Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian Èvenk.
Etymology: < Russian Èvenk, a back-formation < the plural form Èvenki < Evenk Èvènki (singular), self-designation. Compare Tungus n. Compare also Even n.4, the name of a related people living chiefly to the east of the Evenks.In plural form Evenki after the Russian plural form. Pronunciation with stress on the second syllable reflects the position of stress in Russian. In β. forms apparently showing a reinterpretation of the plural form Evenki after names in -i suffix2.
