Etymology: < French analogique proportional, based on analogy, showing analogy (mid 16th cent. in Middle French; 1610 with à in sense ‘analogous to’) and its etymon classical Latin analogicus concerned with grammatical analogy (2nd cent. a.d.) < Hellenistic Greek ἀναλογικός based on mathematical ratios, relating to analogy < ancient Greek ἀναλογία analogy n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare Italian analogico (1550). Compare earlier analogical adj.
