Etymology: < classical Latin ēventilāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of ēventilāre to winnow thoroughly, to fan away (air), in post-classical Latin also to investigate, examine (3rd cent.), to aerate (blood) (1575 or earlier) < ē- e- prefix2 + ventilāre ventilate v. Compare earlier ventilate v. and slightly earlier eventilation n.Compare Middle French eventiler , eventiller , esventiler (French †éventiler ) to expose to the wind or air (1578), to aerate (blood), to refresh (a part of the body) (a1590). In senses 3 and 4 after the corresponding senses of ventilate v.
Obsolete.
1. transitive. Medicine. To cause (supposed) noxious vapours to escape from (the blood, body, etc.), esp. by opening a vein; (also) to aerate.
