Etymology: Apparently < French éventration the action of cutting into the belly or other body cavity of an animal or person (1743), a condition of the diaphragm ( J. Cruveilhier Traité d'anat. pathol. gén. I. (1849) 618) < éventrer to eviscerate (see eventerate v.) + -ation -ation suffix.
