Etymology: < expectorate v. + -ive suffix (compare -ative suffix). Compare French expectoratif (1656 or earlier as noun, 1681 or earlier as adjective), and (with the use as noun) post-classical Latin expectorativum (1634 or earlier).

A medication that promotes or facilitates expectoration; = expectorant n. Now rare.
