Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Italian explicatura ; explicate v., -ure suffix1.
Etymology: In sense 1 < Italian †explicatura (1499 in the passage translated in quot. 1592 at sense 1), apparently < classical Latin explicāt- , past participial stem of explicāre explicate v. + Italian -ura -ure suffix1. In sense 2 independently < explicate v. + -ure suffix1, after implicature n.
1. Perhaps: the action of unfolding or displaying. Obsolete. rare.
